Smooth Away Your Money, Not Your Legs

smooth-away

I love infomercials.  I’m actually not allowed to watch them because I’m absolutely, 100% of the time convinced that I NEED THAT PRODUCT.  I once bought a lifetime supply of pens and lost them all within a month. I own (and love) the Scunci Steamer.  I bought Smooth Away.

I’m not what you’d call a “leg shaver”.  I avoid it at all costs.  I’m simply too lazy to do it.  Every day, to contort your body into all the different postitions to reach areas you’re not even sure you want people to see, risking dull blades or hot waxes in the name of beauty.  I’m not saying I’m a hippie with hairy legs, I just put it off for as long as humanly possible until either my husband complains that I’m catching up to him or I have to wear a skirt.

Well, summer is coming and with that means lots of dresses.  I’m not really into wearing shorts (lord knows, I’ve tried and failed there) but I wear a ton of skirts and dresses throughout the summer, so my winter “hibernation” must come to a close.

That’s why you couldn’t imagine my glee when I saw the commercial for the Smooth Away hair removal product.  “Removes Hair Instantly & Pain Free”  Can it really be?  I remember the days of Epilady and Nair, the agony of removing unwanted hair and the pain associated with it.  Could this be for real?

Off I began on my quest for this product.  I drove from store to store, hopeful to catch a glimpse.  When I finally found it last night, the cashier at checkout looked at me, eyes bright, asking what aisle it was on, because she too wanted in on the Smooth Away action.

Joyful that I’ve claimed my $10 prize, I rushed home and prepared to be wowed.  I read the instructions twice and followed them to the letter.  What I ended up with was a very low grade 3M brand type of sand paper that you stick on to a rubber hand grip.  You rub in a circular motion 3 times in one direction, then 3 times in te reverse until the hair is gone.

After about an HOUR of rubbing various parts of my legs, I saw certain parts that looked as though they might be smooth, but were still coarse to the touch.  The tougher hairs around the bikini and knee line?  Forget it.  If all I’m doing is sanding my legs, I think I’ll invest in a industrial sander instead.

I’m not sure who this product is really made for, or if the creators might want to site a specific hair type for its intended use, but I am of Eastern European decent and nothing short of a hacksaw and a barrel of wax is going to achieve the smooth results I’m looking for.

In short, I think this may be a decent product to have on hand when you’ve just slipped on a pair of capri’s to realize you see a little bit of stubble on your calves.  In about an hour and a half, you can buff away enough of your flesh and possibly the associated hair so people can’t tell you forgot to shave your legs.

Besides the same old razor and shave gel, what do you use to remove your unwanted hair?  Waxes?  Lotions?  Should I invest in that Australian Nads stuff and rip it all out that way?  Summer time is coming fast and I want some sexy legs to go with my new thin self.  Tell me what works best for you!

I seen the same infomercial and wanted to get this too. I much like you hate to shave my legs. I find it pointless at times.

So Thanks for the honest review and for helping me to save a few dollars.

Unfortunately, we all fall victim to the commercial that delivers nothing but a dream. But it is so frustrating when you thought you found the answer then get thoroughly disappointed!

If you have dark and coarse hair, these things don’t do it. Bleaching it is also not going to work. You will probably bleach your skin more than the hair.

Yes it’s painful, but waxing is by far the most effective hair removal for me.

I’ve been searching for the perfect product myself, and I’d seen the infomercials about this one too lol .. definitely glad I found your post before throwing away more moolah! As for what I use? I’ve gone back to a combination of nair and good old shaving :( it’s the least painful option that I’ve found .. bikini wax = mega OUCH!! lol

  • Lidian says:

I tried this a few years ago, too (don’t know if it is the same manufacturer here in Canada but the same product) and it really didn’t work at all! Back to the razor and hair conditioner (which is a great substitute for expensive shaving gel BTW)!

    Love your site! Cheers, Lidian

I, too am an infomercial junkie. I want the Magic Bullet so bad, I can’t even formulate my want into words. I heard of this product, saw it on an infomercial and am so glad that you posted this in case I found it one day and bought it. There’s something a little weird to me about sandpapering your legs smooth…

  • Kelly says:

I totally agree. A)I’m an infomercial sucker and B)Smooth Away is NOT worth it. I hate shaving too, so I thought I’d try it and decided it takes far too much effort and time…

Well I’m glad I read this before I ordered one. I’m OK watching an infomercial during the day, but when it’s late at night I “need” all the things that looked silly in the daylight. If I want to remove my skin I guess I’ll just wax, at least then I remove the hair along with the layer of skin.

  • This product SUCKS! Not only doesn’t it not work, if you have sensitive skin it leaves a red, rug-burn like rash anywhere you tried to use it. OUCH!

My mom had the old version of these for vacations, it’s jsut that sand paper, no holder, just snad paper that wrapped around your hands. ouch!!!!!!!! when I was done my legs were red, even after reading the instructions. I now know why she had them in the “free” pile of her yardsale, and why the boxes of 3 each weren’t open.

I saw this at Walgreens for $9.97 last week. I had it in my hand….wanting to try it sooo bad. But I chickened out. I asked the clerk in the cosmetics section if she had heard if it worked and she said some people said it did and some had said it did not. Her opinion was that it does better on lighter, less coarse hair.

I*m like you guys, there is a trillion things I*d rather do than shave my legs. My cousin has this & i tried it on my boyfriends arm {in a little spot, he was unaware until i started rubbing, by then it was to late :D } It works & he is still smooth 4 days later :P

  • Mommy Koz says:

I’m convinced every girl/woman/mom on the planet wants this little gadget. But like my husband has to remind me every time I see ShamWow and Magic Putty, if it was so good, why didn’t a major brand buy it out and sell it as their own yet?

Still. If it was between the sandpaper thingy you tried for 2 hrs and the epilady??

    pshaw!
