Interview with Belabumbum Designer Alyssa Weiss
Weeks back, during my Cool Mom Guide Goes Green Review Series, I posted a review (that included some terrible pictures of me…bad lighting…I need to get my hubby to take some when we’re not exhausted with kids getting put to bed to replace those) about Belabumbum Lingerie & Maternity.
I was so impressed with the look and feel of the product they sent me and thrilled that someone has finally designed a line of Maternity Wear that is both beautiful and functional. Granted, I’m not pregnant, but a just recently had a baby so I remember the nights in my comfy but ugly ‘moo moo’ wishing there was something out there to make me feel beautiful.
I recently caught up with one of the creators of these innovative products and had a chance to sit down for an interview with Belabumbum designer Alyssa Weiss-
How did you come up with the name Belabumbum Lingerie & Maternity?
-Belabumbum means “beautiful bottom†in Portuguese. We started our lingerie line first and liked this name.
What inspired you to create this brand/store?
-It started as an experiment and ended as a lifestyle! My partner Heidi went to Brazil often for her previous job and we decided to go down there together to see what we could drum up
You already offer such a vast selection of lingerie, loungewear, maternity and eco-friendly products on your site. Is there anything you’re considering adding to the collection in the next year or so?
-We are constantly trying to expand our offerings, whether it’s experimenting with new eco-friendly fabrics (like cottons died as they grow with natural pigments, or new items for baby).
Do you have a specific piece of lingerie in your store that’s your absolute favorite? If so, what makes it your favorite?
-I love our girlshorts. There are no seams and it feels like you are wearing nothing. It hits you in just the right places too, to look really sexy.
Who is your target customer?
-Our target customer is smart, fashion-forward and knows what feels good to wear.
I reviewed your Bamboo eco-friendly line, how did the idea for eco-friendly lingerie come about?
It seemed like a natural extension of what we do. We work in Brazil because we my partner Heidi used to work in development and we wanted to find a place where we could manufacture in an ethical way and influence a local economy in a positive way. Brazil has all sorts of eco friendly fabrics available and once we felt the fabric, it felt so good we knew we wanted to work with it.
Do you feel that you can be eco-conscious without compromising style?
-Of course! Otherwise we wouldn’t make it.
How do you see the company growing in the future?
-I think we will continue to reach out to new markets overseas and hopefully keep expanding our offerings at the pace we have so far.
I see from your site that the celebrities love your line, can you tell me more about that?
We sell to some great boutiques where celebrities shop – we are happy they found our products. We also work with some great stylists who have become dedicated to our lines and pass it along to their celebrity clients.
I LOVE your maternity line! It’s disheartening when your body grows and you feel unattractive, yet your pieces are super flattering and look comfy. What inspired this?
-we started our maternity line when I was pregnant for the first time. I wanted a nursing bra that was pretty and still comfy/functional. There were none to be found.
Since then Heidi, my partner has had a baby and we have continued to design what we thought worked for us and what we thought other women would enjoy too.
Thanks to Alyssa for taking the time to talk to me about this wonderful product line. I love my new Bamboo Basics loungewear and I wear it all the time! Check out the Belabumbum Boutique for more beautiful designs!
